Derek Munday
Derek has a well-deserved reputation as a highly skilled doctor and significant clinical leader.
Growing one of the largest and innovative GP practices in the UK from small beginnings in 1977, he has been called upon to shape and influence national healthcare strategy and policy in a number of significant areas. His contribution to general practice was recognised by his appointment as a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1998.
Derek’s wider experience as a clinical leader included roles as Clinical Director and Chair of the Professional Executive Committee in a medium sized PCT, and co-founder and co-chair of a health and social care board. However, he would place even more significance on his work in establishing and leading informal voluntary associations and consortia of clinical and managerial colleagues that went on to have significant impact in developing and leading health services. In particular, he always saw the need to develop, encourage and support genuine leadership. He has a particular interest in organisational culture and his wisdom in assessing how people work together is highly valued.
His leadership has always been far-sighted and based on an appreciation of whole person care and the dynamics of whole system working, not just sectarian interests. His natural empathy and people understanding, and his ability to make strong connections has ensured that his legacy in training and transforming care has stood the test of time.
